Dear Dr. King - Brief Article

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I read to my class of second and third graders the book Dear Dr. King: Today's Children Write to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., edited by Jan Colbert and Ann McMillan Harms (Disney Press, 1998). While discussing the book, we examine together how all our lives have been affected by the African-American civil rights movement. I then ask the students to write their own letters to Dr. King, as if he were alive today, expressing their feelings about his work and thanks for what he accomplished. They illustrate their letters, and I bind them into a book. Placed in our classroom library, it becomes a favorite during free reading time.
