Joey Pigza is back for the final installment of adventure, medication, and realizations. The previous Joey Pigza books, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key and Joey Pigza Loses Control, deal more with suffering from ADHD and how others help Joey manage his life; What Would Joey Do? discusses the ways Joey can manage his ADHD for himself. Readers would have a more complete picture of Joey by reading the previous books in the trilogy, yet it is not necessary.
Joey's family is still dysfunctional. His father has returned to town, even though his mother is now trying to move on and date someone else, resulting in several unexpected altercations. Joey's grandma, who lives with Joey and his mom, realizes she is close to dying and spends most of her time ensuring Joey makes friends (other than his pet Chihuahua, who ends up on his own dognapping adventure). Joey is now being home-schooled by a Christian neighbor, who is constantly reminding Joey to make good decisions based on "What Would Jesus Do?" His only "friend" is Olivia, a blind and mischievous homeschool classmate. Can Joey really fulfill his duty as Mr. Helpful to everyone?
The Joey Pigza books are especially good for students with ADHD and reluctant readers. The excitement and entertainment never seem to end. Be warned of a little foul language and constant Christian values portrayed here. The life lessons Joey learns in this book, however, make it worth reading--you'll find yourself being quite proud of Joey's achievements. Jennifer Baldwin, M.S. Teacher, Stella, MO
