Jennifer BaldwinChicago Review Press. 132p. illus. bibliog. index. c2003, 1-55652-479-X. $17.95.
Salvador Dali was one of the most influential surrealist artists. Ross helps his readers understand the life and beliefs of Dali and other influential people of his time (Sigmund Freud, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Man Ray, Rend Magritte, Frida Kahlo, Marcel Duchamp). He also provides information about the Dada movement, cubism, fascism, communism, pop art, and expressionism.
The 21 activities help to explain surrealist ideas and techniques. Most of the activities require few supplies (paper and pencil, pen, or paints). Photographs and paintings help the reader become more familiar with Dali and the other surrealist painters. The extensive timeline, as well as the glossary, featured art museum and Web site list, and bibliography make this activity book a great resource. Jennifer Baldwin, M.S. Teacher, Stella, MO
