A pint and a PC please, landlord

RICHARD GARNER

YOU could soon be popping off to the pub for a pint AND a chance to learn computer skills.

The Government is providing pounds 252 million to help make the nation's workforce more computer- literate.

And, to make the challenge less daunting, some of the first community computer classes will be held in pubs.

A "drink and drive a mouse" initiative is being pioneered in Staffordshire, a "lap top for the over-50s" project is running in Walthamstow, East London, and Burnley Football Club are making facilities available for IT courses.

It is hoped a network of 700 centres will be in operation by September.

The latest survey shows that more and more jobs now demand some form of computer skills.

It also revealed that 71 per cent of people with jobs have access to a computer, but only 32 per cent of the unemployed have access to one at home. Mr Michael Wills, Minister for Learning and Technology, said: "IT skills are a must-have for most job applicants. That is why we are investing that pounds 252 million to bring IT to people's doorsteps."

Community groups can draw up a bid for their own learning centre. A prospectus to help them do it is available from the Department of Education, Great Smith Street, London SW11 3BE, or call on 0845 6022260.

Applications should be submitted by May 5...so don't delay.
