'Strange way for servants to act' - Letters - Letter to the Editor
John M. WardI read with interest the article on James Carroll and the promise of reform. You noted that Paul VI panicked on the issue of birth control. An article in Reader's Digest said that the present pope was one of those who advised the pope to accept the minority report to the commission. I think that the commission voted 72 to 28 in favour of allowing contraception.
In spite of that, it is now estimated that 93 per cent of Catholics use it at some time in their married lives. St. Paul says that the Spirit blows where He will. Surely, this is one instance of this.
The biggest hurdle that conservatives in the church find bard to swallow is that the hierarchy does not have a direct line to the mind of God. Jesus pointed to the authorities of the time, how they made their power felt. He told his apostles that they were not to act like that; they were to be servants.
Sure a strange way for servants to act.
