National Naval Services Section 2001-2002 Goals And Objectives - Brief Article

RADM G. Robert Merrilees

We are looking forward to a busy and successful year for the Naval Services Section.

At our first meeting, 7 July 2001, we agreed on the importance of teamwork and communications. Because this is a multifaceted section, we also discussed how to make a difference in providing advocacy to each component. I requested that each individual provide written status reports on the stated goals and select at least one significant goal to assist his/her component.

The stated goals are the following:

* Upgrade C-40A aircraft and information technology for the Naval Reserve;

* Enhance equipment on F/A 18 aircraft for the Marine Corps Reserve;

* Provide balanced force mix and full funding for the Coast Guard Reserve;

* Provide an organized Reserve component with comparable pay and benefits for the Public Health Service Reserve;

* Maintain the Officer Corps for NOAA.

We intend to work closely with, and fully support, each affairs committee. The Naval Services Section includes five components and therefore five affairs committees, as follows:

* Navy Affairs Committee--CDR Joel Rothschild, USNR

* Marine Affairs Committee--Col Frank Ryan, USMCR

* Coast Guard Affairs Committee--CAPT Donald Grant

* Public Health Service Affairs Committee--CAPT Paul Johnson, PHS

* NOAA Affairs Committee- CAPT Richard --R. Behn, NOAA

We have submitted nominations for nearly 100 members to serve on committees, thanks to the efforts of CAPT Mileva Hartman, USNR.

We intend to utilize ROA's recent information technology upgrades to send information via e-mail to all Naval Service Section members. In addition to news items, single-page information sheets will be sent out from time to time. We will utilize all means possible to communicate with our constituency.

We have an obligation to fully support the national president, Col Chip Holsworth, and the ROA staff as we increase membership, raise the visibility of ROA, and improve the overall organization as advocates for national security.
