Goldeneye: Rogue Agent

Christopher Jackson

There are basically two reactions to EAs GoldenEye revival: cynicism over the obvious attempt to trade on the success of Rares Nintendo 64 classic or excitement about the possibilities of an updated first-person Bond shooter. After getting hands-on with an early level of Rogue Agent, getting excited about this spiritual successor certainly wasnt a problem. So far, the game is a promising work in progressexpectedly rough in spots, but clearly on the right track for redefining the Bond franchise.

But youre talking about an entirely different developer, making a pseudosequel to one of the greatest shooters ever

Well, if the team over at EA Los Angeles is intimidated by GoldenEyes legacy, the game certainly doesnt betray any of their creative insecurities. Immediately noteworthy is the fact that Agent feels good to play; the games analog aiming is well tuned, and the team is taking smart cues from recent innovations, such as independent weapon control for each hand or two-fisted melee combat la Riddick. Your enemies are also pretty smart for faceless minions, using cover and flanking tactics like theyve been swapping tips with Halos Covenant Elites.

So do you get to finally kill James Bond?

Believe it or not, you get the chance to send Bond plummeting to his fiery demise in the very first mission. With environmental and background concepts by legendary Bond production designer Sir Ken Adams, the two levels we played packed plenty of vintage 007 flavor. The first single-player map is the Fort Knox assault from Goldfinger; destructible backgrounds and interactive deathtraps make up for the levels unobscured linearity. The Moonraker arena is loaded with deathtraps, so good aim can still lose out to a superior grasp of level gimmicks.

Sounds like the games on track. What was the story again?

As weve mentioned before, you play as a renegade 00 agent who takes up company with Auric Goldfinger. Playing up your villainy during gameplay garners more experience and more cybernetic upgrades for your golden eye from sugar daddy Auric. Its a unique progression system that rewards players to roleplay from the perspective of a megalomaniac.
