Jesus and The Holocaust: Reflections on Sufferings and Hope
DeHainaut, Raymond KJESUS AND THE HOLOCAUST: REFLECTIONS ON SUFFERINGS AND HOPE. By Joel Marcus, Doubleday, $19.95.
The author who has taught biblical studies at the University of Glasgow and Princeton Theological Seminary, wrote this book because of the many links he began to perceive between the sufferings of the Jew, Jesus, an the countless people who continue to suffer because of the Holocaust. He illustrates his first chapter with a copy of Chagall's "The Crucified" which depicts several rabbis hanging on crosses in front of a quaint little European village. This was related to feelings of Jews about Holy Week when Christian mobs had often gone on a rampage against the Jews' alleged crime of having murdered God. The author fmds many comparisons between Jesus and the Holocaust victims. Jews, during the holocaust, as they were stripped and spat on, in the same manner that Jesus was, were told, "We are doing this so that you will know that you are being dehumanized." This book is a valuable resource for those who continue to struggle against dehumanizing forces.
