The Breakers is reformed : Grand old lady gets a makeover - Brief Article
John BartonThe oldest course in Florida, the Ocean Course at the grand old lady of Florida resorts, The Breakers Palm Beach, has emerged from a dramatic $20 million renovation. The 103-year-old Alex Findlay design was worked on by course architect Brian Silva, who built 18 new greens, added more length and created or rebuilt 88 bunkers. Included in the upgrade is a new three-story, 32,000-square-foot golf and tennis clubhouse that opens in January.
Starting in 1995, Silva also renovated the esteemed Seminole Golf Club, just up the road and ranked 14th among America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses. The Ocean Course will never be mistaken for Seminole, nor will it ever be as tough a test--the confines of the property mean that it can be stretched to only 6,200 yards--but it has been transformed from an interesting historical relic into a modern, sporty resort course that still retains its vintage, old-world feel.
