Congratulations!

Kay J. Maxwell

Yes, kudos to all of you for your extraordinary work during the 2004 election year! I know that we do this work for many reasons--because we know it is valuable, because we care passionately about voter education, because we want to. And, we do it whether or not anybody notices or takes the time to say, "thank you." But, isn't it nice to be thanked and honored publicly!

That's what happened on July 23rd. It was my privilege to personally accept--on your behalf--the 2005 Freedom Award from the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). The presentation was made at a special luncheon during NASS's annual summer conference in St. Paul, MN. This Freedom Award honors men and women--as well as organizations--who have made significant contributions to the cause of free elections in the United States. I know you will agree that NASS chose wisely!

In addition to NASS, our special thanks go to the National Association of County Recorders, Election Officials and Clerks, the organization that nominated the League for this recognition, and to NIC, Inc., the company that funds the award. The award itself is a beautiful piece of engraved crystal that will have a place of honor in the League's office.

NASS allowed time after the presentation for me to present the DVD that the LWVUS produced about our past year's activities for viewing by the audience. The DVD highlights the League's great work; those who attended Council in June had a chance to view it. If you would like to buy a copy, you can order one from the League office (see p. 3).

It is often a leader's privilege to accept accolades for the work done by others. During the past year, it was my privilege to travel to a number of states to promote the League's 5 Things You Need to Know on Election Day education project, as well as participate in other election-related activities undertaken by the League at the national level. This award, however, is not for my work. This award recognizes you, the literally thousands of League members across the country who work to register voters, educate voters and get them out to vote.

I thank all election officials for the work they do, and hope you will likewise recognize the work of your local election officials. We all have the same goals--a well-run election in which every citizen eligible to vote has the opportunity to do so and every eligible vote is counted.

At the conclusion of the NASS presentation and remarks, the League received a standing ovation! Can you hear that applause? Take a bow.
