Healthy Eating for Life for Women. - book review
Benjamin A. BensadonHealthy Eating for Life for Women BY THE PHYSICIANS COMMITTEE FOR RESPONSIBLE MEDICINE JOHN WILEY & SONS; $14.95
The seven-member expert nutrition panel of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit organization of 5,000 physicians founded by Neal Barnard, M.D., offers a way of eating based on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes. If you follow their dietary advice, they say, "headaches can become a thing of the past, menopausal symptoms may never even start, and you can gain a new power over the most common and problematic forms of cancer." It sounds easy, but only until you realize that you must also eliminate everything else from your diet--dairy products, meat, poultry, and even fish. But fortunately, the last section of the book is chock full of interesting recipes that incorporate their strategy--for example, their delicious low-fat version of a BLT, which is made with tofu. Although women's health issues, like menopause and osteoporosis, are covered here, as the title promises, much of the book's nutritional information is relevant to men as well.
