Easter Seals CEO: thanks for recognizing talents of disabled
James E. Williams, Jr.Editor, NRN:
Thank you. "Accommodate all employees; hiring the disabled won't handicap your operation," June 7, page 29, makes a critical point--for people with disabilities and for the foodservice industry. We all need to know more about what people with disabilities can do and how, with simple accommodations, people with disabilities can be a valued addition to our staffs.
Unemployment among people with disabilities is disproportionately high. According to the 2004 N.O.D. / Harris Survey, released on June 24, 35 percent of adults with disabilities are employed full- or part-time, compared with 78 percent of adults without disabilities. When asked to participate in the workforce, most adults with disabilities would love the chance to do so and become economically self-sufficient.
The foodservice industry offers significant employment opportunities for people with disabilities. U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics show that the foodservice industry, along with executive and administrative positions, machine operators and sales, accounts for almost 25 percent of all employment among people with disabilities.
The Americans with Disabilities Act addresses discrimination against people with disabilities in the workplace and gives potential employees with disabilities the right to be considered for employment if they are qualified. Your summary of the case in suits pending against Jack in the Box and Steak and Shake was to the point--when managers better understand and are willing to use video screens and lights, rather than bells, hiring people with hearing disabilities is not an issue.
Easter Seals thanks you for your support. We also invite your readers to contact us for more information about educating, hiring and making workplace accommodations. Visit easterseals.com for more information.
We know people with disabilities are motivated and dedicated workers who deserve the chance to add their skills and perspective to our diverse workplaces.
