Subo Sian Griffiths, London Fire Brigade - Your shout: this month, fire officers from Scotland and England defend the current shift system, questioning the proposed reasons for changing it - Letter to the Editor
Subo Sian GriffithsI read with interest the articles in the March edition of FIRE that cover my job and its future. The two articles I have issue with are by EOC Chair Julie Mellor and her comments about the shift system and CACFOA President Jeff Ord's on the Fire Service in the future.
Julie mentions the 'constrictions' of the shift system but ignores your original question that refers to what women say. It appears that both contributors have omitted one crucial element from their comments--the thoughts and views of the most important Fire Service resource, the human beings.
I think that Julie Mellor's uninformed view could be improved by meeting with the women who actually work with the current shift system and want it to stay. Maybe I will initiate this.
I attach for your perusal a document on women's thoughts about our shift system, prepared by Kerry Baigent, Secretary of the FBU National Women's Committee.
Thanks for the even-handed approach your magazine consistently adheres to.
Great cover picture on this issue [March] too.
