SAF Yeast raises eyebrows with new packaging - Brief Article
Dan WagnerSAF Yeast wasn't loafing around when it redesigned its packaging. Several new, eye-catching designs are "firsts" for the yeast industry--including twin packs and larger size resealable pouches--and full color graphics.
Two-up vs. three-up
SAF 3/4-ounce packets are sold in twin packs rather than the traditional three-strip pouches sold by most yeast distributors. Since most recipes only call for two yeast packs, the unique two-strip package eliminates the often wasted packet in three-strip packaging, which earns a few points with consumers.
Full-color printing
Breaking away from the traditional white foil paper packets that use only spot colors, the company has created a more eye-catching packet design for SAF's Perfect Rise and Active Dry yeasts. The packages are in four colors, plus three line colors, and are printed by Prime Graphics. The package also uses a digital photo of a spread of bread, the product most people associate with yeast.
Developed by CPM Alliance, the new graphics will be on the 6-ounce resealable pouch and on some varieties of the twin-pack this fall. It is expected to be seen on the 3-ounce resealable pouch and other varieties of the twin pack next spring.
The words "Active Dry" or "Perfect Rise" are displayed prominently on both sides of the packaging, something many bakers are looking for, according to Randy Watt, president of SAF.
Stand-up pouches
SAF has selected stand-up pouches for 3- and 6-ounce sizes, replacing the traditional glass jar used by other yeast companies. Unlike glass, the pouches won't break and won't have problems with rust near the metal lid. The resealable pouches use the Fresh-Trak[TM] zipper device from Presto Products.
These larger packages will tout the product's ability to be used in bread machines. An actual photograph of a bread machine will replace a graphic on the 6-ounce package. Other packages will also mention the yeast's ability to be used in the popular machines.
Packaging for another popular yeast, Red Star, may begin to resemble SAF in the near future. Watt tells us that SAF has recently signed a letter of intent to buy Red Star yeast.
Some might say SAF's new packaging is the next best thing since sliced, well, you know.
