Beman kicks Indians into quarterfinals
JOHN GARDNER THE GAZETTEThough defenders blocked her view of the goal, Cheyenne Mountain's Brittany Beman figured she'd take a shot anyway Friday in the Class 4A state soccer tournament round of 16 game at Cheyenne Mountain.
From 25 yards out, she chipped the ball over their heads.
Pueblo Centennial goalkeeper Jenny Gradishar extended her arms and jumped. The ball ricocheted off Gradishar's hands into the goal for what would be the gamener in a 3-0 victory.
"Once I saw it hit the back of the net, I was so ecstatic," Beman said. "I didn't really see it because a defender was in the way, but I started jumping for joy."
Cheyenne Mountain (No. 4 seed, 13-2-2) advances to the quarterfinals and will host Greeley Central (10-6-1) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Beman's goal was the only one of the first half. She added an assist on Kelley Lawson's goal in the 74th minute.
"(Lawson) made an awesome run," Beman said.
Beman beat a defender and centered the ball to Lawson, who was coming hard to the left side.
Lawson shot to the right side, fooling Gradishar.
"I was looking for a giveand-go or for her to shoot it and she was wide open," Beman said.
Cheyenne Mountain freshman Taylor Seitz scored the other goal, from beyond the 18-yard box when the ball hit the crossbar and fell behind Gradishar.
"I got lucky that it hit the post," Seitz said.
The shutout was Cheyenne Mountain's 12th of the season.
