St. Mary's ends reign/ Nine-year winless run against CSCS is over/ 17
Jonathan ClarkThe St. Mary's defense can rest, and let out a big sigh of relief.
Goalkeeper Joseph Corsentino had 17 saves to help St. Mary's defeat Colorado Springs Christian 3-2 in boys soccer Friday, breaking CSCS' nine-year unbeaten streak against St. Mary's.
"(Colorado Springs Christian) did extremely well," Corsentino said. "They just played their hearts out, but our defense beat them."
St. Mary's coach Konstantinos Xigacos gave first kudos to Corsentino and Brian Pursley, who scored two goals, for helping the Pirates improve to 10-0 this season.
Pursley scored the first goal 4 minutes into the game and Matthew Grenier continued his team's early scoring momentum, making it 2-0 at the 12-minute mark.
Colorado Springs Christian (7-1) penetrated into St. Mary's territory several times in the first half, but Corsentino and the St. Mary's defense held up.
St. Mary's Michael Macksimowicz was yellow-carded for not being at least 10 yards from a Colorado Springs Christian side-line throw, taking him out of the game until the ball went out-of-bounds. Tom Schipper substituted during the 2-minute interval.
The Lions got back into the game just 4 minutes into the second half as Trevor Schrock scored to make it 2-1. But that momentum was shifted when halfback David Wagner left the game with an injury.
St. Mary's made it 3-1 on Pursley's second goal at the 67-minute mark.
CSCS closed within 3-2 on an Everson goal before St. Mary's closed out the long-awaited victory.
"Our team just pulled it together," said Xigacos, whose team played without top scorer Jacob Macksimowicz, out after receiving his third yellow card in the Pirates' previous game against Fountain Valley. "I just made them believe in each other, and we were united as a team."
