Rome guide added depth
Dorothy SmithI was in Rome for a few days in summer 2003 during the severe heat wave in Europe. A half-day tour of the antiquities was as much serious sightseeing as I was able to manage, but I decided that was not nearly enough and vowed to return when the weather was Cooler and I could find a suitable program. Fortunately, that happened very soon!
In February '04 I spent two weeks as a party of one with an individual guide--a new travel experience, for me. In a place like Rome, where there is so much to see and you must make the most of your available time, it was a very good idea.
I would like to recommend my guide to others who may be interested in seeing Rome in depth. Her name is Katie Parla (10 Heath Ct., Princeton, NJ 08540; e-mail katieparla@yahoo.com). A recent Yale graduate in art history, she is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She offers custom touring to one or two people or small groups.
The cost varies according to the size of the party, the time involved and the itinerary. Katie was with me for approximately six hours every day for two weeks and on three occasions provided transportation assistance to and from evening concerts. I paid her $4,500 for her work.
Rome is a big city with considerable distances to cover plus many important details that are difficult for the uninformed tourist to coordinate, such as opening times, closing days and transportation options. Ms. Parla can put together a package that will allow you to visit as many of the places you want to see as is possible in the time at your disposal. She will emphasize Roman antiquities, museums and churches (or pizza, gelato breaks and shopping!) according to your requests.
I was especially pleased by her making it possible for me to attend several enjoyable concerts. But her specialty is helping visitors understand the various levels of Roman history, how the city presents a unique panorama of civilization over the centuries, with each layer building on those that came before.
So, whether you are going to be in Rome for a few hours or a week or two, I suggest Katie as an invaluable companion for your visit.
