Andrew Greeley presents a fine analysis of the church's structural difficulties. The problem is that church reformers have very little leverage to make Greeley's changes happen. In government and corporate circles, citizens and shareholders have some means for changing structures and leaders. In the church's present form, such measures for change do not exist. Moreover, people at the top insist that God wants things to be as they are.

One possible solution: A large-scale boycott on giving. That would certainly get the attention of rulers, especially at a time when they are paying out millions in sexual-abuse settlements. I find it peculiar that Catholics seem incapable of linking wealth/property and church reform. Where is the next Cesar Chavez to lead a worldwide boycott for democratic structures in the church?
