A Search for Candidates for 2001 - Photographic Society of America - Brief Article

Andrew M. Wims

The Certain Society Awards Committee is relying on the PSA membership to nominate qualified persons for one of five prestigious memorial awards: John Doscher, Victor Scales, Howard D. Lorimor, Stuyvesant Peabody and the PSA Appreciation Memorial Awards. We all know of deserving PSA members who qualify for these awards. Let's put out the small effort required to recognize persons who have devoted tremendous time and energy to the photographic community. I call upon you to become energized and excited about nominating one of our deserving members. A description of each memorial award follows.

John Doschor Memorial Award

Barbara Doscher and Arthur P. Henricks Jr., Hon PSA, FPSA established this award in 1981, in memory of a husband, friend, and long-time member of PSA. The award is presented annually to the member who has made an outstanding or unique contribution to pictorial photography. Classical photography as defined for this award pertains to any photographic medium. The subjects may include, but are not limited to still life, pictorial, nature, and portraiture.

Victor Scales Memorial Award

This award was initiated in 1962 in memory of Victor Scales who provided a great deal of service to PSA through the many positions he held. The award is presented to a PSA member who has provided similar service to PSA over an extensive period of time.

Stuyvesant Peabody Memorial Award

Stuyvesant's son, Patrick H. Peabody, originated this award in memory of his father who stimulated the era of pictorial photography. The award has been continued through a generous gift by Mary A. Mallas, FPSA. This award recognizes a member of PSA who has contributed significantly to pictorial photography in any field of photographic endeavor (by exhibiting, judging, lecturing, writing, teaching, patents and processes).

Harold D. Lorimor Memorial Award

This award was established in 1987 in memory of Harold D. Lorimor who, in only 10 years, contributed generously of his time and energy in many photographic fields of endeavor. To be eligible for this award, a person must have been a member of PSA for between 5 and 10 years and benefited the organization to an exceptional degree over an extensive period of time by teaching, enlisting new PSA members, creating programs, and demonstrating competency and leadership.

PSA Appreciation Award

Drs. Samuel and Evelyn Ross established this award in 1972 in memory of Helen Manzer, FPSA. These former students wanted to honor her in recognition of their admiration of her teaching. The award is to serve as a continuing tribute to persons who have given freely of their time and efforts in the field of teaching. This award is presented in recognition of outstanding service in the advancement of photography by teaching with no financial compensation.
