2000 PSA International Exhibition of Photography - Brief Article
Samuel G. ShawThe Year 2000 PSA International Exhibition closes out with even fewer glitches than the Y2K computer scare. While the PSA International Exhibition is not on the scale of global computer communications, it is almost as global with 1,569 entries coming in from 40 countries. This is an increase of approximately 1% over last year. There was in excess of 100 volunteers working in the 8 competition sections within the PSA International Exhibition.
The largest section is the Color Slide section run by Vivean Peller, APSA from San Diego, California. There were 446 entrants in the color slide section with 314 acceptances, 45 honorable mentions, and 11 medal winners. The PSA gold Best of Show medal went to Noel LaDue, APSA of Sacramento, California for "Drive through the Mist;" Rudolf Pustelnik of Germany earned the PSA silver 2nd Best of Show for "Runaway." In the creative arena, the PSA gold Best Creative was awarded to Carol Bailey, FPSA of Carson City, Nevada for "Dreaming in Africa" while Dany Debrael of Belgium received the PSA silver 2"d Best Creative award for" Muze." The judges also awarded six PSA bronze award of merit medals. These medals were awarded to Roger Jourdain of France for "Sunset on Sheep," Tan Lay Beng of Singapore for "Winter Search," Kenneth Cheng, FPSA of Canada for "Breakaway," Rudolf Pustelnik of Germany for "In Front of," Jim Block Etna, New Hampshire for "Sunset at Mono Lake" and Guy Samoyault, APSA of France for "Narayan" Karl Reitner of Austria received the Valerie Flack Memorial award for the Best Non-Artificial Flower for "Hepatica #5."
Norma Mastin, FPSA from Madera, California, chaired the Nature section. The Nature section consists of prints and slides. There were 28 print entrants with 33 acceptances, 4 honorable mentions and 1 medal. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Gary Weber of Australia for "Spotted Paradalote Leaving Nest." In the slide arena there were 272 entrants with 404 acceptances, 29 honorable mentions and 9 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show went to Chian Foong Tien of Singapore for "Kingfisher 99-17;" the PSA silver 2nd Best of Show was earned by Lin Craft, APSA of Fallbrook, California for "Cleaner Shrimp on Anemone" and the PSA bronze 3rd best of show went to Marc Anagnostidis, APSA, EPSA of France for "Eclosion Danaus Plexippus." Carol Meisenheimer of Anaheim, California was awarded the PSA gold Best Wildlife for "Two on a Tommy," the PSA silver 2nd Best Wildlife went to Jerry Kelley of Tucson, Arizona for "Diamond Back."
There were several special category awards earned. The Lorena Medbery Plaque for the Best Landscape/Seascape was awarded to Ian Davis-Young for "August Aurora," the Lloyd L. Riese, FPSA Award for the Best Geological was earned by Murphy Hektner of Mount Vernon, Washington for "Sandstone Swirls," the Alice B. Kessler, FPSA Award for Best Ornithological Wildlife went to Peter Bisset, APSA, ARPS of Canada for "Red Shouldered Hawk at Nest #10" and the Leslie B. Heeney Award for Best Botany was received by Fran Cox, FPSA of San Jose, California for "Buckwheat & Bitterroot on Lava."
Lin Craft, APSA from Fallbrook, California was the chairperson for the Travel section. There were 204 entrants with 298 acceptances, 30 honorable mentions and 3 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Willy Spegelaere of Belgium for "Just for Cremation;" the PSA silver 2nd Best of Show was earned by Vivean Feller, APSA of San Diego, California for "Into the DepthS" and the PSA gold Best North American went to Lin Craft, APSA of Fallbrook, California for "Waves in Sandstone."
Margee Hanson, FPSA from Sacramento, California handled the three classes within the Photojournalism section. In Class A, large prints, there were 14 entrants with 11 acceptances, 1 honorable mention and 1 medal. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Isadore Berson of Longboat Key, Florida for "Tear." In Class B, small prints, there were 39 entrants with 34 acceptances, 4 honorable mentions and 1 medal. Keith Vaughan, FPSA of Canada, earned the PSA gold best of show for "Fire Boat." In Class C, Slides, there were 134 entrants with 158 acceptances, 15 honorable mentions and 3 medals. Luc Pappens of Belgium was awarded the PSA gold best of show for "Military 3;" the PSA silver outstanding human interest was earned by Guy B. Samoyault, APSA, EPSA of France for "Les Parian 1 ," and the PSA silver outstanding man in motion also went to Luc Pappens of Belgium for "Festina."
The Stereo section had two parts, slides and cards, and was chaired by Victor Lurvey, APSA of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Stereo slides had 123 entrants with 123 acceptances, 10 honorable mentions and 5 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Albert L. Sieg, FPSA, EPSA of Rochester, New York for "Where Have You Been?;" the PSA silver Best Creative went to Boris Starosta of Charlottsville, Virginia for "Bossus." The Best Landscape went to Constance N. Lower of Davenport, Iowa for "Barn Framed," the Howard R. Sweezey Memorial Award for Best Travel was awarded to Henry B. Washburn of Virginia Beach, Virginia for "West Virginia Grist Mill," and Andrea S. Blair of Linden, Virginia was awarded the Stergis M. Stergis Memorial Award for Best Flower for "Petal Dancing." Stereo cards had 34 entrants with 34 acceptances, 11 honorable mentions and 4 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Robert James Leonard, FPSA of Deale, Maryland for "Two Rams;" the PSA silver Best Creative went to H. Lee Pratt, APSA of Madison, Alabama for "Saturday Afternoon Western," the Best People and Travel Plaque was earned by Steve Dudley of Miami Beach, Florida for "Puerto Plata Princess," and the Muscogee 3-D History Award for Best History was awarded to Ron Fredrickson of Roseville, California for "Mono Vista."
The chairman for the Video section was Robert Gestel of Arnold, Missouri. Video had 9 entrants with 10 acceptances, 1 honorable mention and 3 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Ephraim Horowitz of Flushing, New York for "Nothing is Forever:" 2nd place was awarded by the Video Division and went to Howard Lockwood of Lake View Terrace, California for "Beyond the Wall" and 3rd place, awarded by the Video Division, was earned by Gerald Turk, FPSA of St. Louis, Missouri for "Niagara."
Pictorial Prints came in two sizes, Class A - Large Prints has Monochrome and Color and Class B - Small Prints has Monochrome and Color and Class C - Commercial. The chairman for Pictorial Prints Class A - Large Prints was Bob Kegel from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Large Prints Monochrome had 85 entrants with 121 acceptances, 17 honorable mentions and 2 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Gilbert E. De Deckere of Belgium for "Orkaan," the PSA silver 2nd Best of Show went to Reginald Wickham of Mount Laurel, New Jersey for "Woody." Large Prints Color had 93 entrants with 129 acceptances, 18 honorable mentions and 3 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Francisco Pace of Argentina for "Tango;" the PSA silver 2nd Best of Show went to Bailey Donnally, FPSA of Lake Forest, Illinois for "Arches," and the Wellington Lee, Hon PSA Award for Creative Use of Color was earned by Fred Greene, FPSA of Canada for "This Old House."
The Chairperson for the Pictorial Prints Class B - Small Prints and Class C - Commercial was Helen Weinman, DFS4C of Torrance, California. Small Prints Monochrome had 23 entrants with 34 acceptances, 8 honorable mentions, and 2 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show went to Noel LaDue, APSA of Sacramento, California for "Lynx Close Up," the PSA silver 2nd Best of Show was earned by Gene Kirksey, APSA, EPSA of Fort Bragg, California for "Sand Fish." Small Prints Color had 22 entrants with 31 acceptances, 5 honorable mentions and 2 medals. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Amin Shaikh, FPSA of Pakistan for "Tiger Landed," the PSA silver 2nd Best of Show went to Roger Erich Schuettke of Belfair, Washington for "Rufous Flame-Bearer 399-4." Small Prints Commercial had 43 entrants, 63 acceptances, 15 honorable mentions and 1 medal. The PSA gold Best of Show was awarded to Siegfried Matull, EPSA of Gualala, California for "Picture Perfect."
