Fountain Valley plays C.S. Christian even in soccer
Jonathan ClarkFountain Valley's boys soccer team kicked up some fierce competition at home against Colorado Springs Christian, ending up in a 1-1 nail-biting overtime stalemate Thursday.
Colorado Springs Christian coach Mike Schrock described the game as a "moral victory" for Fountain Valley because it has neither beaten nor tied CSCS in the past seven years.
In the first half, Fountain Valley's Adam Lampert scored the first goal. CSCS, however, also got on the board in the first half with a goal by Chris Overton.
The rest of the game became a grudge match between the two sides. Fierce efforts by both, however, prevented the tie from being broken.
CSCS' Mike Everson and Fountain Valley's Lampert both exhibited excellent offensive ball control, putting their teams in scoring position.
CSCS' Overton employed a rarely used forward-flip to gain extra distance on his sideline throw-ins.
"It's a dangerous tool," Schrock said. "We try to use that whenever it goes out of bounds because it's like a corner kick from the side."
Good sportsmanship also characterized this game. When a CSCS player misjudged a header and fell hard, Fountain Valley's Arnaud Kajangwe helped him up, giving him a smile and pat on the back.
Several injuries also occurred, two to Fountain Valley starters who had to be substituted for. Matt Zay and Duncan Handford were both taken out of play during the first half.
Despite their loss, the team's offense remained strong, Fountain Valley coach Paul Kim said.
"They didn't play in the second half, and we still held up," Kim said. "So that's a big confidence boost for the kids."
Handford was a particularly big loss since he had scored a hat trick against Evangelical Christian last week.
