Mitchell finesse bests Wasson

Mitchell's boys soccer team finessed its way to a 6-0 victory at home against Wasson on Friday, scoring all of its goals in the first half.

Kurtis Adkins, Mitchell's captain and fourth-year varsity player, led the way, scoring three goals.

Adkins' aggressiveness had a cascade effect, inspiring teammates Chris Hartzell, Gonzalo Alfaro and Balzit Singh, who also scored goals.

Wasson's defense fought tenaciously with Jordan Ray exhibiting excellent passing control with the head and feet.

Wasson's goalie Mark Piard made 12 saves, including an impressive tap over the goal in the first half, preventing additional goals.

Wasson's offense, however, was not able to keep up with Mitchell's speed and passing game, Adkins said.

"Every time we've played Wasson in the past, we've kind of been on our heels because we've overlooked (Wasson)," Adkins said. "Today we worked really hard to come out strong."

Mitchell's offense was bolstered by Hartzell, Alfaro and Pete Randall, each with an assist. Adkins and Alfaro each had four shots on goal.

Ray made three shots on goal, leading his team in scoring attempts.

Mitchell's goalies, however, met Wasson's challenge, making 10 saves. Sean Schimmel had four saves and Joslin Devon six.

Mitchell also had the added benefit of having a foreign exchange student on the team in Alfaro.

Hailing from Spain, Alfaro has been playing the game all his life and is enjoying the chance to play the sport in the United States.

Alfaro believes the game is played in much the same way in both countries but at a higher difficulty level in his native country because of the skill of the Spanish athletes. He does, however, appreciate the opportunity to play the sport he loves with his American counterparts.
