Cheyenne Mountain nets one-goal victory
Jonathan ClarkCheyenne Mountain's field hockey team worked its magic Saturday, narrowly beating host Fountain Valley 1-0 with Megan Tilney conjuring up the sole goal in the first half.
Kelly Noble, the Indians' leading scorer, sat out this game due to an injury. Nonetheless, Cheyenne Mountain's offense managed to get the job done.
The Indians' magic continued with an impressive stop by goalie Katherine Ste- ward against several Fountain Valley players threatening in the crease in the first half.
Fountain Valley captain Sunita Brown made a powerful shot on goal, leading her team in scoring attempts.
In the second half, Cheyenne Mountain's Lindsey Robbins stole the ball from Erin Toal-Rossi, enabling the Indians to drive the ball downfield.
Cheyenne Mountain coach Darcie Nagle commended her team for working well on passing, communicating, moving the ball upfield and being very aggressive.
"We used to kind of hang back and play very defensively," Nagle said.
In the past, Fountain Valley (1-6-1) has beaten Cheyenne Mountain (3-3-2) by scores such as 10-0 and 15-0. Saturday's league victory, however, has bolstered the Indians' confidence, she said.
"Our girls really care about winning," Nagle said. "Having gotten stomped 15-0 from several teams in the past, it's really exciting for them to win."
Cheyenne Mountain junior varsity players Eva Batzil and Megan Fry played due to several varsity absentees.
Nagle credited Ashley Lambert, Tilney, Kaley Knafelc, Robbins, Chelsey Doell, and Annie Wadman as some of the most valuable players in this game.
