"Introducing D.E.W.East"
Cornerstone D.E.W. East is a trio of top Toronto-based musicians who offer an intriguing mix of compositions and sounds. Barry Elmes is without question one of the most impressive percussionists on the scene today; Steve Wallace (acoustic bass) never fails to surprise, with his big round tone, solid time and humour to boot, and the third member, Alex Dean -- who seems to have mastered so many of the saxophones -- shows off his prowess here on bass clarinet, (Eric Dolphy influenced) flute as well as sax. Each member of the trio is represented by their writing as well as their playing with "Give Every Man his D.E.W." (Wallace), "Mr. B.C." and "Waltz New" (Dean), "The Thruster" and "Don't Get Lost" (Elmes), and a trio collaboration "Soul-Ammons-Dean". There are also a couple of standards to add spice to this delightful recording: "It's Easy to Remember" and "These Foolish Things". This is a band that needs to work the festival/club circuit to be exposed to large audiences, who would certainly enjoy the music in a live setting (They are visually stimulating).
In the meantime, pick up this CD and enjoy the musicianship.
