"Plays the Music of Duke Ellington"
Cornerstone CRST CD 110 Time Warp features four of Canada's finest jazz musicians: Barry Elmes (drums), Al Henderson (bass), Mike Murley (saxophones) and Kevin Turcotte (trumpet/flugelhorn), plus special guest pianist Mark Eisenman on five of the ten songs.
Opening with "Such Sweet Thunder", the mood of the Duke is beautifully created, and held throughout the disc. "Hot and Bothered" features fiery solos by both Turcotte and Murley (the latter on soprano sax), "Pitter Panther Patter" jumps out of the speakers with some bright brush work on the drums by Elmes, and an intriguing bass solo ensues by Henderson, followed by Eisenman lifting the spirits even higher. The feeling of joy by the musicians performing the music of one of the greatest composers is abundantly clear from start to finish. One of the best Ellington tributes to be released recently is this one by Time Warp; be sure to add it to your collection.
