Remarks from the editor

Reibling, Louis A

THE first issue of The Community College Enterprise marks both a beginning and an extension. The new title of the journal reflects the scope of what we publish about endeavors in two-year colleges across the country. The word "enterprise" also suggests the continuously evolving nature of the two-year college mission in the 212 century. Since the Spring 2002 issue is designated Volume 8, Number 1, the first issue of the ccE also represents an extension of the research and practice published in the Michigan Community College Journal over the past seven years. As our institutions grow, partner, evolve, and reinvent themselves, The Community College Enterprise will help communicate the developing changes.

In the "Two Sides of the Same Coin" interviews this issue, Laurent Parks Daloz, a faculty member/leadership director, and Shauna Salin, a two-year college graduate, speak about their perceptions of student expectations in college. Two articles that follow the interviews look at aspects of assessment. Hans Andrews, Beverly Harris and Christine Licata present strengths and concerns identified by chief academic officers and faculty leaders in current faculty evaluation systems. Kevin Trutna discusses the merits of a program evaluation process that incorporates distinct performance measures and established benchmarks.

Ed Hara has interviewed newly hired workers in order to write an article on their definition of "literacy" in the 2111 century workplace. In the "Short Take" feature, Mara Jevera Fulmer challenges the attitude that music, theater, graphic design and studio art do not constitute "real" academic disciplines.

Four authors-Tracy Payne, Susan Herndon, Lamar McWaine and Claire Major-investigate the responsibilities of community college faculty in one Southern state and the rewards they may expect to receive for their efforts. David James examines three techniques used to sabotage change in educational institutions then considers crucial steps to fostering culture change within an organization.

Lucia Buttaro demonstrates the benefits of pairing a speech class with a content area course as a method to improve English language listening and speaking skills for the growing number of English as a Second Language students inAmerican colleges. The book review feature of the journal this issue offers recommendations for two books, one about community college future policy and a second one about realities of online teaching. The technology review praises a CD-ROM/web-based "textbook" that combines video, audio and text to engage students in learning.

As we embark on a new phase of the journal, we are interested in trying new approaches that fit within our mission. We would particularly like to publish more about community and/or business partnerships with community colleges. If you have suggestions, please send me an email (lreiblin@schoolcraft.cc.mi.us).
