Life and death - Backfire

Doug Hart

An association of independent motorcycle shops has been needed (and contemplated by many) for years. Now it's a necessity for our survival. Independent shops are faced with not only the same obstacles and challenges as any small business, but also a unique challenge that comes from within the powersports industry itself. And it may be fatal if it's not corrected.

The motorcycle aftermarket has been built on the backs of independent shop owners. Our vision, skill and dedication are responsible for bringing the aftermarket to where it is today. Now the suppliers and distributors that we, the retailers, have supported and promoted over the years are working against us instead of with us. They are abandoning us and going directly to the retail customer, either through mail-order sales or by selling to "unqualifieds" or non-legitimate buyers.

Granted, the problem has existed to some extent for years and years, but it's now reached epidemic proportions. The unethical and unsound practices of these companies reflect poorly on the entire industry, and if this isn't corrected, independent shops will become the first casualties.

The entire aftermarket relies on a strong dealer network. Manufacturers and distributors need the credibility and influence of independent shops to promote their products. Support and success of legitimate, credible retail establishments are essential for maintaining the continued prosperity of distributors, manufacturers and the aftermarket as a whole. How can independent shop owners be expected to continue supporting these companies and their products when their tactics make it impossible to compete?

Individually, we have little ability to influence an outcome. But as a united force, we have several options to enact positive change. By joining the Independent Motorcycle Shop Association (IMSA), an owner will become part of an organization that represents quality, integrity and professionalism. Members will benefit from the strength and support the IMSA provides to help them regain (and maintain) the ability to compete by stopping companies from engaging in unethical practices by competing directly with dealers for their customers. The IMSA may be able to provide more affordable insurance, health care and merchant service rates, plus promotional and co-op possibilities, in the future.

For $100 a year--less than $2 per week and it's all tax-deductible--an independent shop owner can be part of a solution to the problems plaguing our industry and threatening our very existence. If you're not part of the solution, then that's part of the problem.
