Colorado College wins in thriller/ Tigers score all points in fourth

Paul Wallace

Colorado College finally found a way to win a close football game Saturday. It recovered from six- and five-point deficits to edge Westminster College 16-12 by scoring nine points in the last 23/4 minutes.

Trailing 12-7 late in the game, Colorado College moved to Westminster's 27. The drive was killed with the third interception of quarterback Chris Witt at the 6.

The Blue Jays' drive stalled at their 14. They decided to take a safety instead of risking a punt return to cut the lead to 12-9 with 2:43 left.

Andy Cornell returned the free kick to the Westminster 47. On the second play, Witt found Tim Wolfmeyer for a 46-yard pass and run for the winning touchdown.

"Our upperclassmen showed a lot of character, they really showed a lot of leadership in the last few minutes," coach Greg Polnasek said. "This is our first win in the last three games with time running out and it was great for our team."

Senior Chris Witt felt like a weight had been been lifted. "I thought about coming up short in last week's game (against Kalamazoo College) a thousand times this week. I made some poor decisions earlier in the game and we weren't going to let this one get away."

Westminster (1-5) scored on a 50-yard pass from Chris Marshall to Andy Jahnsen in the second quarter. Fumbles and interceptions plagued the Tigers (3-3), and penalties by both teams killed drives.

The Tiger defense, led by linebackers Justin Knox and Jake Latka, put constant pressure on the passing game of the Blue Jays. Pete Sigler led CC defensive backs with four unassisted tackles.

The Tigers went ahead 7-6 early in the fourth quarter when Joel Nelson scored on a 20-yard touchdown dash.

The Blue Jays took the ensuing kickoff and scored. Marshall's passing accounted for all of the yardage, culminating with a 15-yard pass to Ryan Brodecker to go up 12-7.
