Students sound off on how much high-school sports impacts their
Hannah Owen, Danielle NeeleyThis week the Deseret News Pulse Team of teenage reporters asked their peers how much sports impact their schools, and what it means for school spirit.
"A lot. It brings school spirit, because everyone gets together to go to the games, and without the sports there'd be nothing to do." -- Lisa Wood, sophmore, Bingham High School
"High school sports are something I choose not to waste my time on. West loses in everything, so there is no point in going to the games, and they are boring anyway." -- Mark Hollaar, senior, West High School
"I'd say it's pretty big. Everyone goes to the games." -- Katie Ray, senior, Bingham
"I love high-school sports, because they bring everyone together and bring a spirit of unity and a charged atmosphere that is otherwise lost in everyday life." -- Sam Helgren, sophomore, Redeemer Lutheran High School
"They have a really big impact, because Bingham is the best and we always win. It's the big game." -- Kyle Heaton, senior, Bingham
"The impact that sports have at our school is more rivalry between schools. At the same time they impact how much school spirit we have, especially the sports our school does better in." -- Maelee Brunner, junior, Kearns High School
"High-school sports possess a guise of ability when in reality they hide an ineptitude to excel in the arts and sciences." -- Rusty Bogart, junior, West
"High school sports aren't bad. Although we tend to lose, I have fun watching with friends. And really, who really watches anyway? Games and the like are more social activities than anything else." - - Celia Pietsch, junior, West
