摘要：Spontaneous supernumerary ocelli on Girardia tigrina (Girard, 1850) (Platyhelminthes, Paludicola)
from State of Paraná, Brazil
The studies concerning morphological abnormality on freshwater planarians has improved insights
about developmental biology and etology of these flatworms. This paper is the first record regarding
spontaneous supernumerary ocelli on Girardia tigrina (Girard, 1850) for State of Paraná, Brazil. We
registered 16 specimens harbouring one or two supernumerary ocelli in right and/or left side of the head,
from 96 planarians kept in laboratory. The morphology of the supernumerary ocelli was identical to the
normal ocelli. The data suggests that the occurrence of spontaneous supernumerary ocelli is not dependent
of the presence of conspecific. Planarians with spontaneous supernumerary ocelli showed normal
photonegative, reproductive and feeding behaviour. Therefore, we propose that the presence of the
supernumerary ocelli is related with individual features of G. tigrina. Two new morphotype ocelli are
described for G. tigrina from southern Brazil.
