摘要：Continental reptiles from the municipality of Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Rio Grande is located in the coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul state, to west of the Lagoa dos Patos
estuary. This area is characterized by a great diversity of environments such as swamps, fields, Restinga
forests, streams and interior ponds, besides an extensive coast. The present study had as main objective
to make a list of the species of continental reptiles present in the municipality, collecting through several
methods such as visual encounters, traps (pitfall, aquatic traps and artificial shelters), observations, and
material analysis donated by collaborators. Between April 2003 and August 2005 we accomplished 161
collections at seven places of the municipality, covering environments such as natural field, native forests,
swamps and dunes. The methods allowed the capture of 405 individuals representative of 30 species,
belonging to 25 genera, 12 families and three orders, being 11 species of reptiles Squamata registered
for the first time to the study area. Although Rio Grande is on Pampeana Province and most of the
species of reptiles there are typical elements of this Zoogeographical Province.The city also possesses
typical species of the Tupi Province and mainly of the Guarani Province.
