摘要:Soil entomofauna associated with pig carcass decomposition in a rainforest fragment in
Pernambuco, Brazil
Although insects are usually the first organisms to colonize a vertebrate cadaver, there is little
information on the soil entomofauna associated with corpse decomposition in tropical regions. This
study aimed at investigating the diversity and abundance of insects collected in the vicinity of a pig
carcass in a rainforest fragment in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Piftall traps were scattered around a pig
carcass and insects were collected at 2-day intervals for 30 days. Hymenoptera (33.9%), Coleoptera
(28.5%) and Diptera (21.7%) were the most frequent orders. From the nineteen families registered,
Formicidae, Scarabaeidae, Staphylinidae, Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae were the most abundant.
Atta (Formicidae) was the most common genus throughout the study. There were differences in the
pattern of insect diversity according to the stage of decomposition, although ants and rove beetles were
present at all stages. All four ecological categories of carcass-associated insect groups were registered:
necrophagous, predators, omnivores and accidental visitors.
