摘要:The general aim of this study is to analyse the way in which participants in focus groups evoked trust in a discussion concerning medical confidentiality, to examine how they elaborated the notion of trust and took it as a resource for their argumentation. After showing the various facets of the notion of trust, we present the method of focus groups which was used in our study and our theoretical framework, namely a dialogical approach to language and cognition which is deeply influenced by Bakhtin.
The corpus of the data is made of 6 focus groups which discussed a fictitious case, e.g. a dilemma which involved the notion of medical confidentiality and indirectly the issue of individual freedom as opposed to collective interest.
The method of analysis consisted firstly of analysing the subjects’ answers to the dilemma, the trajectory of the answers throughout the discussion and the relationship between answers and trust. Then we analysed the discursive moves through which the subjects of two contrasted groups answered the dilemma and elaborated the notion of trust.
The results showed that the notion of trust was evoked in different ways and played various argumentative roles depending on the answers to the dilemma. The analysis of the step by step unfolding of the discussion showed that a participant’s reference to the notion of trust can only be understood with respect to the other participants’ production. As a discursive object, trust is therefore the fruit of a collective activity.
