摘要:The research deals with the relationship of immigrant families of Indian and Cape Verdean origin with the schooling of their children when the latter are attending compulsory education (Second Basic Education Cycle / Grades 5 and 6). It seeks, in particular, to ascertain the support practices that the families implement and their idealization of their children’s school careers. It represents an exploratory approach to the information gathered in a questionnaire survey of state school children in the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures (IALL) – those with the highest contingent of schoolchildren reflecting the desired profile – and covers a total 837 pupils. A certain number of interviews with family members are also included.
One of the particular conclusions of this analysis is the committed relationship that immigrant families of both Cape Verdean and Indian origin develop in their connection with their children’s education, given the educational support practices that prevail. No significant differences in relation to native Portuguese families are registered. Another striking aspect is the breadth of educational support points, a breadth which is reflected, particularly among families of Indian origin, in the use of a considerable network of people outside the nuclear family (friends, neighbours).
