摘要:ABSTRACT:In this paper I study the affinities between English tradition –in its philosophical and literary expressions- and the writings of Jorge Luis Borges, who considered himself “an English author writing in Spanish”. In the first part I analize the philosophical and aesthetic sympathy that Borges felt for William James’ pragmatism. In the second part I show how this sympathy goes beyond William James and extends to English tradition. Indeed, what one can consider the main characteristics of English tradition –scepticism, nominalism, antisistematism, freethinking and a particular sense of humour- form a philosophical and literary character very close to the one that underlies in Borges’ writing. In the last part I study how this character does not belong to an alleged national idiosyncrasy, conceived in essencialist terms, but to a determinate historical process that enabled humanist values to perdure while being uprooted by rationalism in the rest of Europe.
