摘要:The dispute for the first position in the adoption of new technologies and in the development of new services hasguided much of the strategies of the Brazilian mobile telephone companies. This article aims at identifying andcomparing the competitive advantages that are being generated by Brazilian mobile telephone companies andthat stem from their technological options (CDMA; GSM) for the operations in the Rio Grande do Sul State. Theresearch is exploratory and qualitative, being developed in two phases. In the first phase, the theoreticalframework, with the main strategic categories of the sector, was developed and served as the basis for the secondphase. In the second phase, two case studies were conducted with two of the largest (altogether, they representmore than 60% of market share of the sector) mobile telecoms in the country. The main result was the detectionthat most competitive advantages of these companies stem from their technological options (CDMA; GSM), notfrom organizational actions. Another important result was the identification of competences with competitiveadvantages generation. From a Resources Based View perspective, a distinction was made among the conceptsof resources, capacities, and competences in order to compare the studied companies.
