摘要:This paper describes the results of research which objective was investigate how deeply practices adopted by a large Brazilian financial institution present characteristics that are modern enough to make feasible and sustain the competence model implemented. The theoretical referential used was an adaptation by Sant’Anna (2002), of the Organizational Modernity Approach developed by Eboli (1996) and a review of Anglo-American and French approaches about Competence. As to methodology, this research can be characterized as a case study which focus was predominantly qualitative, and which was carried out by means of semi-structured interviews. Based on the theoretical referential of the paper, five people management practices were analyzed: rewards, performance evaluation, corporate education, promotion/career and strategic outlook. As a result, it must be stated that the prevailing people management practices do not adhere enough, in terms of the characteristics of modernity investigated, to the competence model adopted.
