摘要：The close relationship between Mexico and the United States, characterized during more than a century by pragmatism, has improved notably since the integration process began in the nineties. Despite that, there are outstanding problems which make it difficult to advance towards a closer integration along the lines of the European Union. Two importante factors are: US immmigration policy, which includes the construction os a wall along the frontier; and the reluctance of the Mexicans to go along with closer cooperation on the defense issue. In both countries, there are isolationists and integrationists and the future of the relationship depends on the dispute between them.
