摘要：The debate about affirmative action in Brazil is relatively new and has
its own peculiarities. This article develops a historical approach and compares the North
American society with the Brazilian one in aspects as racial relations and affirmative
action in higher education. It focuses mainly on the establishment of racial quotas in the
selection of university students in both countries. It also shows that the debate on racial
quotas is relate to the definition of a national project of society.
