摘要:This work documents the impact of poverty on families from two
different cultural niches, suburban areas around Mexico City and
rural New York, USA. From a social ecological perspective, poverty
is understood as the condition of being exposed to multiple
stressors. The results confirmed the negative impact that physical
conditions (density and noise), characteristics of poverty, have on
child development. In contrast, the socioemotional stressors
showed a differential impact in the rural New York sample but not
in the Mexico City sample. Mexican mothers seem to have coping
strategies for socioemotional stress, and these may also enable
them to buffer its negative effects on their offspring!ˉs!ˉ wellbeing
These findings supported both the heuristic richness of the social
ecological perspective and the pertinence afforded by
conceptualizing poverty as the condition of being exposed to
multiple stressors.
