Nascimento, On the “Livro de José de Arimateia”: in search for a path, in a recovered fragment from the 14th century The article deals with the manuscript transmission of the medieval Portuguese translation of the Livro de José de Arimateia, a part of the Grail tradition, in light of a recently discovered fragment. We re-examine the colophon of Manuel Álvares’ manuscript, a copy made ca. 1545, concluding that the text of the work preserved in the manuscript is, in essence, that established by Juan Sánchez, headmaster of Astorga, ca. 1314, when he had a copy of the original translation made. In contrast to traditional views, however, we posit that the manuscript of the original translation was not taken to Astorga, where Sánchez was thought to have had his copy made, but rather that he had it prepared in Coimbra, within the context of his associations with the University. Furthermore, as speci?cally concerns the bifolio fragment recently found in the District Archives in Oporto, we view it as dating from the early 14th century and, as such, see strong possibilities of it being a fragment from the Sánchez codex itself, which a poem in the Cancioneiro Geral is referred to as the “long book of the headmaster or Joseph from Arimathea”. Other aspects of textual reconstitution are considered as well.
