摘要:I teach a special needs class in a high school setting. The students’ disabilities include developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, mental health issues, learning disabilities, and hearing impairments. The sixteen students often have their core subjects with me and are integrated into options classes according to their interests or abilities. I want my students to feel like they belong in the school as a whole, not just in my classroom.
When I first joined the school I understood that part of my mandate was to find ways to increase the visibility of the students with special needs in the school. To the administrator, who had previously worked with me in a middle school where the students with special needs were fully integrated, it felt like they were too separate and isolated in the current situation.
