摘要:It has become a commonplace of literary criticism to accuse Ovid the
elegist of insincerity. Arising from the inevitable comparison usually established
between the Amores and works by Tibullus and Propertius, the verisimilitude revealed
by the latter is emphasized in contrast with the apparent detachment shown by the
Sulmona poet. In this article, we first consider the theoretical grounds to ascertain the
impression of sincerity conveyed by a poet, which will then allow us to determine the
criteria according to which one can consider Ovid to be a sincere poet. If, on a poetic
or rhetorical level, Ovid appears to be a poet of little sincerity, we suggest that,
according to the perspective of literary pragmatics, by drawing distinctions between
the narrating characters that Ovid brings to life, it is possible to argue that he is
actually the most sincere of all elegists.
