摘要:In recent years, a number of Federal
and local efforts have been
launched to help communities
assess and improve their community
food security situation. In a
food secure community, residents of
all income levels have access to sufficient,
affordable foods that enable
them to lead active, healthy lives.
Developing a standard for assessing
whether food is available and
affordable in a community is complex
because a variety of factors
come into play. One possibility is
to determine how much a family
would have to spend in local area
stores to buy a specific set of relatively
lower cost foods that make
up a nutritious diet. In this study,
researchers with USDA¡¯s Economic
Research Service (ERS) used a
weekly menu meeting the nutritional
and dietary requirements of
the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) to
assess food availability and affordability
in Washington, DC.
