摘要:Trends in in-migration and out-migration of care workers exemplify a nation’s
repositioning within international economic hierarchies including international
divisions of reproductive labour (IDRL). Through an examination of nurse
migration in Ireland in historical and contemporary contexts, this article
demonstrates how this country has been repositioned within the IDRL over the
last decade. It emphasises that Ireland’s internationalisation strategy, as
exemplified by its recruitment of nursing labour from Asia, amounts to the export
of its health system problems to developing countries. The article also highlights
the inequalities and discriminations upon which the Celtic Tiger is based and the
ethical dilemmas and tensions facing policy makers that arise from the growing
international trade in nurses.
