The aim of the study was to analyze post operative effect of Modified Radical Mastectomy (MRM) and Breast Conservation Therapy (BCT) on quality of life and psychological aspect in women operated at departments of Surgery, K. E. M. Hospital, Mumbai and Tata Memorial cancer centre, Mumbai during last 5 years.
Twenty five patients (mean age 45.32 yrs, tumour size 2.3 cm) of stage I and II ca breast who have undergone MRM and 25 (mean age 44.32 yrs, Tumour size 1.5 cm) other of stage I and II ca breast who have undergone BCT were interviewed. They were given following Questionnaires during their post operative follow up. 1. Quality of life questionnaire (PCASEE), 2. Self reporting questionnaire (SRQ_20), 3. Assessment of postoperative pain (VAS scale) and 4. Questionnaire to assess following factors such as local numbness, tightness in chest or stretching, paraesthesia etc. Statistical methods as chi square test, t-test were used.
There was no significant difference in Quality of Life and psychiatric disturbances found out by PCASEE scale (p = NS) and SELF reporting questionnaire-20. Thus from the study BCT and MRM are equally comparable for early breast cancer in India.
