摘要:The loss of biological
diversity is one of
the most serious
environmental problems
in the world today. The
maintenance of biodiversity in
healthy balanced ecosystems is
crucial to the survival of life on
Earth. Yet, the loss of biodiversity
is alarmingly high worldwide. Up
to 60,000 plant species could be
lost by 2025 if the present rate of
extinction is maintained. The Food
and Agriculture Organization of
the United Nations has estimated
that, since 1900, about threequarters
of the genetic diversity
of domestic agricultural crops
has already been lost.
