摘要：This article deals with the evaluation of scientific periodicals from the field of Administration in Brazil, based on the use of the concept of the impact factor vis-à-vis their classification in the CAPES Qualis System. We seek to discuss the applicability of the impact factor as an instrument that ensures new guidelines for gauging quality. To this end, twenty-one periodicals and the Enanpad annals covering the period of 2005 to 2007 were analyzed. The periodicals were divided into three groups: ‘A’ Recent Domestic (made up of periodicals which were assigned the ‘A’ status in 2007); ‘A’ Traditional Domestic (made up of periodicals which have had the ‘A’ status for some time); and ‘B’ Domestic. The results show a significantly higher concentration of quotes and the impact factor for the group designated as ‘A’ Traditional Domestic. We did not find any significant difference concerning the impact factor in the other groups. This finding has some inconsistencies pertaining to the concepts obtained from Qualis-CAPES in 2007 by the other two groups. In addition, we did not find any significant influence of selfquoting in the annals of Enanpads or the temporal window for calculating the impact factor. These results enabled us to reach a conclusion on the viability of the use of the impact factor as a relevant criterion in the evaluation policy of periodicals. This is not about considering the unidimensional quality concept but rather about recognizing that the repercussion of a periodical reflects the interest sparked by the articles published in it in the construction of scientific knowledge.
