摘要：The present paper aims at studying the main appellatives that designate relief forms (oronyms)
within Dolj County. The toponyms that render the varied characteristics of the relief are quite numerous
and suggestive. From the numerical and terminological point of view the best represented are the hills
(for example, the term of ¡°hillock¡± has been identified in 633 cases), while, at the opposite end, there are
the negative relief forms. There are a lot of oronyms that render valuable clues regarding certain
economic activities that developed in time; thus, grazing brought to the withdrawal of the forest limit in
favour of pasture lands and arable plots, fact emphasized by various oronyms. The inhabitants¡¯
occupation and the cultivated plots are well-represented as compared to the social-economic and spiritual
dimension, which is less present in the oronyms.
The analysis of the main appellatives that designate relief forms within Dolj County emphasizes the
inhabitants¡¯ denomination capacity, their observation and knowledge spirit related to the petrographic
structure, topographical configuration, geomorphologic or vegetation characteristics, as well as certain
aspects of the economic reality. Together with other categories of toponyms, the oronymy of the
analysed area reveals a large toponymic wealth that, besides the linguistic originality of most of the
terms, confirms the permanent dwelling of Dolj area.
