摘要:The agency of institutions –through language policy and language planning– is one of many factors influencing language. At the supranational level, a case in point is the European Union, whose language policy is based on the principle of multilingualism, the reason behind its twenty-three official languages. Its consequences can be seen in: (a) major in-house translation services; (b) a range of policies aimed at ensuring the quality of legal drafting and the consistency of terminology; and, (c) the development of a particular sociolect, Eurojargon.
The language of EU's documents derives from an array of factors like relevant laws, institutional usages, political decisions, technical expertise, or the very act of translation. All this, coupled with such a linguistic diversity, makes for the extraordinary complexity that is nowadays facing the EU with the challenge of preserving multilingualism in a context of conflicting budgetary demands.
